Medieval Mindset is seeking a talented thumbnail designer to join us for an ongoing remote collaboration. We create long-form video essays exploring medieval history, culture, and the surprising ways the past connects to modern life. With a growing audience and a strong track record of high-performing videos, we’re looking for someone who can help us keep that momentum going with thumbnails that stand out instantly.
Our thumbnails blend a cutout of the host with striking historical imagery from museums, open-access archives, and public-domain collections. The style is simple but distinctive: bold, clean, a little unexpected, and designed to work at a glance on mobile. We rely on artwork that feels authentic to the subject matter, paired with minimal text and strong visual contrast. If you understand how to make history feel compelling, clickable, and premium without overdesigning it, this role could be a great fit.
For each new video, you’ll review the title and brief summary, and optionally the script if needed. From there, you’ll research and select the strongest period artwork, combine it with the host cutout, and adjust the composition so the final image feels cohesive and polished. You’ll also create multiple thumbnail variations so we can test performance and refine based on results after launch.
We’re looking for someone who can move quickly, communicate clearly, and bring creative judgment to the table. If you have a strong sense of composition, know how to make historic artwork pop on a small screen, and aren’t afraid to challenge a weak idea with a better one, you’ll likely thrive here. An interest in history is a plus, and experience with YouTube thumbnail testing is especially valuable.
The ideal candidate has a portfolio of thumbnails created for YouTube, preferably for educational, documentary, or commentary content. You should be comfortable working with fine art, photo composition, lighting, and typography, and able to deliver first concepts within a few days of receiving a brief. We’re aiming to build a long-term working relationship with someone dependable, creative, and easy to collaborate with.
If you’re excited by the idea of helping shape the visual identity of a history channel and creating thumbnails that can drive real audience growth, we’d love to hear from you.
